Explore Shinsekai around the tower

Shinsekai is a district in southern Osaka, known for its oversized retro signs, food streets and Tsutenkaku tower. Its name means New World. Janjan Yokocho, a covered shopping and dining alley in Ebisu-higashi, adds a different street scene to the tower surroundings. Start by deciding whether food, views or local history should anchor your visit, rather than trying to fit every attraction into the same outing.

The district developed around the site of the 1903 industrial exhibition. The original Tsutenkaku and Luna Park opened in 1912; the present tower dates from 1956. That history makes a street walk rewarding alongside a visit to an observation deck. Our Tennoji and history guide connects the neighbourhood story with temples and park visits.

Choose an experience before adding sights

The food walk with 15 dishes includes three drinks and starts in a basement meeting location in Taishi. Another guided tasting route starts at Ebisucho and includes up to 15 tastings and drinks. The walk offering 18 foods includes three drinks and a local guide; dietary adjustments are limited and may reduce the tastings. These are walking experiences with specific starting arrangements, so use the tour comparison to match the meeting point to your arrival.

The tower experience offers separate choices: the general deck, general plus outdoor deck, individual activities, or an All-in-One combination. A Slider activity ticket covers the slide itself; observation admission belongs to the relevant deck option. The retro walk ending at Abeno Harukas offers a photograph on your own phone at Tsutenkaku on request, with food expenses extra. For temples and history, the guided route through Shitenno-ji, Tennoji Park and Shinsekai includes an exterior view of Tsutenkaku.

Kushikatsu and Janjan Yokocho

Kushikatsu are small pieces of meat or vegetables that are deep-fried, while dote-yaki is beef slowly cooked with miso and other seasonings. Janjan Yokocho brings dining and shopping together, with businesses serving dishes such as kushikatsu, sushi and udon. Each business sets its own opening hours and closing days. Give yourself room to look at individual menus rather than relying on a single timetable for the alley.

Our food and tasting guide compares a Shinsekai and Dotonbori programme, a local evening food round and a walk starting at Ebisucho. Choose a lunchtime or evening plan around the booked departure and your appetite. For a visit focused on illuminated streets and dinner, continue to the evening guide.

Good to know before setting out

Tsutenkaku general observation opens from 09:00 to 21:45, with last admission at 21:15, and requires an admission-time reservation. The outdoor deck uses stairs and can close in rain, strong wind or fog. Read the tower guide before combining a meal with a deck visit. Abeno Harukas has a separate observation attraction, art museum and department store; plan each visit around its own admission arrangements.

Ebisucho exit 3, Dobutsuen-mae exit 1 and the JR and Nankai exits at Shin-Imamiya provide different approaches. The tower operator gives a three-minute walk from Ebisucho exit 3 as a guide, rather than a journey time from your accommodation. Choose a station using our arrival guide. For dinner and small purchases, carry yen cash, as small businesses may accept cash only.

Osaka context: Namba, Dotonbori and Osaka-jo

Dotonbori belongs to the Minami shopping and entertainment area and is reached through Namba. Its signs and riverside promenade offer a different setting from Shinsekai. Osaka-jo provides another historical reference: construction of the first castle began in 1583, while the current main tower dates from 1931. Treat these as separate parts of a wider Osaka plan and keep your Shinsekai time focused on the streets and experiences here.

Continue through the region

For a separate regional outing, use the guide to Himeji Castle. Keep that visit as its own travel plan, with transport and admission considered separately from your Shinsekai activities. Within this neighbourhood, choose between an evening meal, a temple walk and a viewpoint before committing the remaining time.

Questions about your visit

Is this guide independent?

Yes. VisitShinsekai.org is an independent guide, separate from Osaka city authorities, tourism offices and attraction operators. It helps you compare visits and experiences without representing those organisations.

Which experience fits a food-focused visit?

Choose a tasting walk for an outing built around included dishes. The tours page compares the neighbourhood food walks, while the food page covers additional tasting formats and their meeting points.

Does a walk to Harukas include the observation deck?

The retro walking route ends at Abeno Harukas; its included service is photo assistance at Tsutenkaku on your own phone. Arrange observation-deck admission separately for a viewpoint visit.
